Nature vs. Industry Photo Essay – Noah Selig

Expressing true beauties of nature can balance out any unevenness.
“In nature, light creates the color. In the picture, color creates the light.” – Hans Hofmann
The importance of getting up close and personal can drastically change one’s perspective in any situation.
During the day, things may seem bleak. At night, a little light environment can bring some life to the situation.
If there is intent to kill, it most likely murder.

“We speak of love when we destroy nature. It sounds like innocence of cruel arrogance.” – Toba Beta
“There are dark shadows on the earth, but its lights are stronger in the contrast.” -Charles Dickens
“These temple destroyers, devotees of ravaging commercialism, seem to have a perfect contempt for Nature, and, instead of lifting their eyes to the God of the mountains, lift them to the Almighty Dollar.” – John Muir
When there is beauty, someone will find a way to destroy it out of selfishness.
Two drastically contrasting themes of an areas natural state and tainting it with industrialization.
Three images can tell a clear and concise story. These three images represent beauty, the impact of a change to an environment, and the physical changes happening to nature. One large, big, beautiful thing can outweigh two lesser depictions.

Artist Statement: This photo essay was intended to be a mixture of destruction and nature and the neverending pursuit of commercialization. Our institution of Rollins College has been undergoing many constructional changes over the past few months. I wanted to capture the essence of how both the natural state is being affected in either a negative or positive way. As we clearly see, the process of building can be ugly and the surrounding environment becomes somewhat of a visual nightmare. The air pollution or runoff has sparked controversy among a few student conversations. I created this photo essay to spark a conversation should be had to better understand the importance of messing with the natural order. I tried to strive for quality shot composition and a balance of a unique color pallet. All images have the common theme of showing greenery and nature, whether or the natural state has been disturbed.
